Portugal’s National Treasure — Agile, Alert, and Full of Personality
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is the smallest of Portugal’s national breed and a product of centuries of careful breeding by dedicated dog lovers. Originally developed to hunt rabbits—either solo or in small packs—this hardy little hound is as capable in the field as it is loyal at home.
Energetic & Driven
These dogs are lively and athletic, thriving with at least one brisk walk or active play session each day. Their hunting roots make them agile, quick, and determined, with a strong prey drive and a nose for fun.
Playful & Smart
Podengos are intelligent, curious, and often hilarious companions. They love to play—either with toys, with each other, or by stalking and chasing in the yard. Their clever minds pick up on new tricks and routines quickly, making them a joy to train.
Watchful & Loyal
While affectionate and eager to please their family, Podengos can be reserved with strangers, preferring to approach new people on their own terms. Their keen senses and alert nature also make them excellent watchdogs. However, due to their strong hunting instincts, they may view smaller animals—like cats or toy breeds—as prey unless properly socialized.
Tolerant & Compliant
Despite their independence, Podengos are very tolerant and willing, often going along happily with whatever their family asks of them. They thrive in homes that appreciate their mix of spunk, sensitivity, and intelligence.
